Vegetable Harvest Report 02 2009

Rooftop Garden Vegetable Harvest
Okay, so here is the much anticipated 2nd update in the 2009 harvest. I wanted to post this much sooner, but I had to wait until the vendors at the greenmarket started to sell the produce I was already eating from my garden. The cherry tomatoes in the pic were immediately gobbled after I took this shot. If I didn't have to photograph them I doubt they would have made it off the roof.

Broccoli: 3 ounces
Average Price: $0.18/ounce
Total: $0.53

Cherry Tomato: 12.2 ounces
Average Price: $0.46/ounce
Total: $5.61

Eggplant: 1 pound 11.7 ounces
Average Price*: $0.34/ounce
Total: $9.42

Hot Pepper: 8.3 ounces
Average Price*: $0.31
Total: $2.57

Weight Total: 3 pounds, 3.2 ounces
Price Total: $18.13

Running Weight Total: 3 pounds, 8.8 ounces
Running Price Total: $20.15

*Not a lot of vendors are selling these items right now so this average will change over time as I'm able to to collect more prices.

  1. What a great harvest! I don't have any eggplants yet but I've got lots of buds. Can't wait to have some too. -Jackie

  2. What great looking eggplant. I should have bought some seeds. Almost did, but I did buy a plant. I'll have to run out and look at it. Thanks for sharing your greenmarket prices. Don't forget to average in the entertainment value of gardening. Just think of the time you spend in maintaining plants and sustitute other entertainment costs...like movies or eating out.

  3. Excellent looking produce! I thinking that perhaps I should have grown eggplant this year. But hey, there is always next year.

  4. I just stumbled onto your blog and am really enjoying it! Have you been having problems with late blight on your tomatoes? So many other bloggers in the northeast seem to be, and I'm hoping it doesn't migrate west to me in Kansas.

I also really like your colander. What kind is it?

  6. Hi Jackie, what kind of eggplant are you growing? These are Hansel ones are great.

Hi mlc, that's a good point about the entertainment value, it's hard to quantify, but it's definitely an important part of gardening.

Hi Alexandria, I think that's one of the best things about gardening, if something doesn't work out there's *always* next year.

Hi Jennifer, no late blight (knock on wood), but there always seems to be something going on with the tomatoes. I checked the colander but I couldn't find a brand name and I can't recall where I bought it.

Hi Balcony Gardener, thanks for stopping by!
