2012 Rooftop Garden Closed For Winter

Okay, welcome back to the site. I apologize for my late return. I fully intended to resume activity in the beginning of November, but then Hurricane Sandy happened and garden blogging was pushed to the back of my mind. But now I'm back and can tell you how the fall crops performed.

Close to the End

Only 3 plants left from the summer garden. The Black cherry tomato, the Flexum Hybrid pepper and the Mountain Magic tomato. I think the Black cherry can be removed by this weekend. The Flexum pepper will stay for however long it can last. It continues to flower and fruit.

Summer's Last Gasp

The soybeans and beets were moved away from the chimney to get more sun.

Winding Down

The last melon plant has been retired, more beet seeds have taken its place.

Sleepy Summer Days

One melon plant left on the roof. I'm not sure how much larger these fruits will get, the leaves are really worn out.

I wanted to wait another week to harvest these, but I needed the windowsill space to start my melon seeds, so out they came.

It's been about a month since I planted the carrot and soybean seeds indoors. I think they look pretty good, no signs of disease and the leaves are a nice healthy green.

Last week I started a small indoor vegetable garden. My fall planted soybeans and carrots did not work on the roof so I'm trying again on the windowsill. So far I've successfully grown swiss chard, radishes and beets indoors, now I'm trying a few more vegetable varieties.

Now that the weather is cooling down I've planted a few fall crops and prepared some containers for winter storage.
